What motivates desk workers to sit less and move more?

How often do you find yourself sitting down for a long period of time? Due to the nature of our modern-day lives, this probably happens regularly. Maybe your job requires you to be seated at a computer for most of the day, or maybe you have found yourself reading BeUpstanding™ blog posts for hours. Do you want to be less sedentary and move more during your work time? If so, what motivates you to do this? Increased computerisation and modernisation of the working environment allows desk-based employees to complete most of their tasks seated. Too much sedentary time is now acknowledged as a public health concern, as well as an emerging work health and safety issue. Prolonged periods of sedentary time can increase the likelihood of developing diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other lifestyle-related diseases, as well as detrimentally affect mental health. In contrast, regularly interrupting sedentary time, including by standing up, doing simple resistance activities (like going up and down on your toes), or going for a walk, can help reduce these impacts. Finding your ‘why’ for moving more at work

This won’t be like most articles that you’re used to reading online. You won’t find 6 quick steps to feeling more motivated to reduce sedentary time at work. You won’t see expert secrets that promise “one strategy to unlocking your inner drive”. What you might find is something more valuable to you as an individual. Because the reality is, we’re all just too different for there to be one motivation to change. No one thinks and experiences the world quite like you do. What motivates you to move more at work, may not be the same thing that motivates your colleague, team leader or morning coffee buddy. In a world where we’re loaded with information about what we should and shouldn’t do, we could probably do with a bit more “why” time. So, we’ve parked the “what” for now and instead focused on ways for you to consider your own internal motivators. If so, read on because we have some topic ideas and tips to help you keep your team excited! Colors, images, tone of voice, and content can all be used to make your emails motivational. If you already have an idea of what will motivate your team, go for it! The suggestions below are simply some topic ideas that you are welcome to use. Current events To keep your emails engaging and relevant, try to tie current events into the theme of your email. You can do this by mentioning seasons, holidays, or sporting events! For example, you could use the Commonwealth Games as motivation: “Inspired by the Commonwealth games? Consider trying a new activity or revisiting one you used to play. Maybe you could try a race walk to your next meeting! You don’t need to be training for Birmingham 2022 to get the benefits out of sitting less and moving more.” Activity outside of work Now that staff are getting used to more activity at work, this is a good opportunity to encourage physical activity out of office hours.
